LOWLANDS

When we were children, you and I

All gone, All gone, away my Boys

Our uncles hugged us and they said goodbye

All gone, away.

They felt immortal as all young men do

They climbed aboard the train, the whistle blew,

We waved to them on that bright summer day

The women wept, the old men looked away

They crossed the ocean and one day that fall

A soldier paid the family a call

The word spread quickly through the town

That Jack was missing, his destroyer had gone

down

And now immortal they shall be

Today we honor them for their great loyalty

Their love of country, their great and terrible gift

To us who live the lives they might have lived.
