CT: It's no secret that Fred Newman is one of the best sound effects persons working today, and that he supplements his income by enhancing scripts and stories for public radio. We're always on a tight budget and even tighter deadlines and it's such a comfort to have Fred at hand.

(PHONE RING PICKUP) FN: (BARKS) Dog Bark productions, this is Fred.

TR (Robert Siegel): Fred, it's Robert Siegel, All Things Considered.

FN: Hey, Bobby what's up?

TR: More of the same, Fred. Breaking news, absent minded producers, you know the drill.

FN: I do. (SFX DRILL). TR: Fred, you're a nut. Our first piece needs atmospheric sound effects of a battlefield.

FN: Got it. We rolling?

TR: Yes.

FN: (SFX ASSORTED GUNFIRE)

TR: Great. Sounds good. And can you toss in a chopper and mortar rounds?

(SFX CHOPPER, MORTAR FIRE, CHOPPER FADES)

TR: I'm under the desk. That's perfect. The next piece is about the tranquility of life in the American suburbs.

FN: Can you just roll with it and we'll record?

TR: Perfect, we're rolling.

(SFX LAWN SPRINKLER, WEED EATER, DRIVE BY LAWN MOWER, DOG BARKS, BIRDS FLUTTER)

TR: Oh my, that was lovely. One last thing - Anne Taylor forgot to identify herself at the end of her piece so just give me three in a row if you would.

FN: Ok. I'm Anne Taylor. I'm Anne Taylor. I'm Anne Taylor. TR: Talk to you next week, Fred. I'm going hand the phone to This American standing next to me.

TR (IRA GLASS): Hello, Fred? Ira Glass.

FN: Hey, Ira. TR: Fred. I'm in a pickle. Not a literal pickle, which refers to disgusting things in a King's menu, but a 21st century pickle - a quandary, a difficult position.

FN Got it.

TR: We're doing a piece on why babies cry, but the melodious cadence of my voice put them to sleep.

FN: How sweet.

TR: Indulge me baby sounds, if you would, Fred and end with a happy contented child.

FN: Ok. I'll slate them. (SFX PRICKLY HEAT, JUNGLE, BIG WAH, GRAND MALL)

TR: That's great, Fred. And the contented baby?

FN: (SFX CONTENTED BABY)

TR: Thanks, Fred, you're the best. Call you next week.

FN: I'll be here.
